Hugging Face Hub adds discovery for reinforcement-learning tasks
Framework tags identify compatible task repositories; the NeMo Gym example rewards adherence to a specified JSON schema, which defines the response structure, rather than factual accuracy.
The catalog supplies a task, then a framework takes over execution. Hugging Face's September 28, 2026 release adds discovery for reinforcement-learning environments to the Hub while leaving execution with frameworks.
Environments use dataset repositories with an rl-environment tag. Additional tags identify compatible frameworks, including Harbor, Verifiers, OpenEnv and NeMo Gym. A tag neither translates the repository's files nor launches a workload. Execution and outcome checking still depend on the framework and the environment's implementation.
The reward deserves separate scrutiny. In the documented NeMo Gym structured-output example, the verifier checks whether a response follows a JSON schema. It does not establish factual accuracy. In the OpenEnv example, a missing reward calls for inspecting the error rather than immediately blaming the model.
The architectural recommendation is to keep the task version and scoring rule beside every execution record. Use Harbor's reference solution before involving a model. For OpenEnv, the documented inspection code reads the saved result:
import json
from pathlib import Path
result = json.loads(Path("rollout.json").read_text())[0]
print("Reward:", result["reward"])
print("Model calls:", result["n_turns"])
print("Error:", result["error"])
Who handles an incorrect verifier: the dataset maintainer or the framework maintainer?
